Neurons have a variety of shapes. The most common are the multipolar neurons, which are found in the central
Holdings,
nervous system, shown here, and in the autonomic ganglia of the peripheral nervous system. Other neurons have a
spherical shape such as those located in the sensory ganglia (see Nervous System; Sensory Ganglion). The sensory
neurons are classified as pseudounipolar neurons because they have one process extending from the perikaryon,

Other neurons are bipolar, such as those in the retina of the eye. Retinal bipolar neurons receive information from
redistributed
the rods and cones and distribute this input to the ganglion cells in the inner areas of the retina.
In this micrograph of motor neurons from the ventral horn of the spinal cord, the nucleolus (arrow) is not as round
or
as that seen in other examples but, nevertheless, is visible in the nucleus. One of the key histologic features in the
modified
identification of the neuron is a darkly stained nucleolus.
