Cardiac muscle is located in the middle layer of the heart, which is called the myocardium. It constitutes the main
muscle mass of the organ and is responsible for pumping blood through the heart and to the organs. A portion of

the myocardium is depicted here. Bundles of cardiac muscle cells are separated by connective tissue that contains
blood vessels (arrows). The myocytes are closely packed together with little intervening intercellular space.
