In this case CD30 (left) stains the both the membrane and the cytoplasm of the Reed-Sternberg cells diffusely and somewhat weakly and also, more strongly, the perinuclear Golgi apparatus. The cytoplasmic staining is probably artifactual. CD15 (right) shows crisp membrane staining as well as Golgi staining. CD30 is also reactive with activated T-cells. CD15 is also reactive in (in fact characteristic of) maturing myeloid cells and occasionally in many different forms of cancer. Despite this, CD15 staining is very valuable in identifying Hodgkin lymphoma, because CD15(+) Reed-Sternberg cells are not readily confused with other cell types. On the contrary, the large, atypical cells of analplastic large cell lymphoma, which can resemble Reed-Sternberg cells, are also CD30(+). |
